An abandoned domain name has expired and it is under the "custody" of a domain name registrar. This can be released but there is a corresponding price that you have to pay. Frankly I am not so aware of the mechanics but I was made to understand that an abandoned domain name can be a good source of instant traffic.

yeah. Instant traffic is the advantage of those kinds of domain names. You only need to work a little to get more traffic.

M, it depends on some things, such as instant traffic amount or price of that domain. You should count these things exactely.

i find these abandoned names can cost a bit, because of the traffic they bring in, if i was you i would buy a older domain, in the buy, sell and trade of any forum, and develop it from there. You have the all important history of the domain to develop on :)
